Meet Dr. Derek Guillory
Derek W. Guillory, MD, is a board-certified physician and the founder of Root Causes Medicine. After years practicing in conventional medical settings, Dr. Guillory noticed a recurring pattern: patients with persistent symptoms, normal test results, and no clear explanation for why they weren’t improving. Rather than accept symptom management as the endpoint, he began developing a framework to explain what traditional care often missed. Root Causes Medicine emerged from that work—a structured approach focused on identifying what interferes with normal physiology and what the body lacks to repair and regulate itself.
A Physician Focused on
Explanation, Not Assumptions
Dr. Guillory’s work centers on one guiding question: why is the body struggling? Instead of treating symptoms in isolation, he evaluates how environmental exposures, nutrient status, stress physiology, and daily inputs interact over time. His goal is not to overwhelm patients with information, but to create clarity—replacing uncertainty with understandable priorities. This approach stays medical, practical, and evidence-aligned, avoiding ideology, trend-driven protocols, and unnecessary complexity.
Training and Credentials
Dr. Guillory is board certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine and has practiced as a physician since 2005. He was among the first physicians in Texas trained in this style of root-focused care. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Education from Baylor University, graduating Magna Cum Laude, completed medical school at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, and finished his Emergency Medicine residency at UT Southwestern. His background bridges acute care, chronic illness, and long-term health strategy.
The Root Causes Medicine Framework
Root Causes Medicine is built on a simple principle: health declines when harmful inputs accumulate and restorative capacity falls short. Everyday exposures—air, water, food quality, household products, and chronic stress—quietly add load to the system, while nutrient gaps and physiological strain reduce the body’s ability to repair. Fragmented care treats symptoms; Root Causes Medicine connects patterns. Using structured, stepwise protocols, Dr. Guillory helps patients lower unnecessary burden, replenish what’s missing, and track progress over time.
Teaching Beyond the Clinic
Dr. Guillory is committed to making this way of thinking accessible beyond patient visits. Through the Root Causes newsletter, educational writing, and an upcoming book, he translates complex science into practical understanding. His goal is to help people think clearly about health before problems become entrenched.
